"Meet the woman behind the sports bra, Portland's most anticipated new bar"

by Demi Laurence- April 4,2022

Jenny Nguyen, a woman who opened a bar in downtown Portland on Broadway Street has made a one-of-a-kind bar. Jenny came up with a risky but brilliant idea to open a bar that only streams women's sports, after she faced going to a bar in hopes of watching a popular women's team play but then looked around and found all men playing sports on the big screens. Her key take away was that she wanted people to walk out of her unique bar and have the same vibe as a regular bar but have the TV's show women's athletics. That's right, all women's sports. Did you know that only 4% of bars play women's sports? This is the first and only bar/restaurant that only streams women athletics. They even welcome kids to expose them to womans sports.

Value proposition aka Mission: "To make great food, delicious drinks, and provide a space that supports, empowers, and promotes girls and women in sports and in the com" munity.

Jenny did an amazing job creating this sports bar to promote women, but it's not just because she streams women’s athletics on tv. Sports Bra partners with other females who have a similar goal which is empowering women. Jenny buys 100% grass fed meat from a local female farmer located in Molalla and buys fresh produce from another local woman owned farm located in Sauve’s Island. Freeland spirits is another woman operated distillery she partners with, which is another thing that I value is supporting local small business rather than buying from large billion-dollar companies. Lastly, all of her wood tables are made by women that take classes to learn how to strengthen their building skills and to just learn how to do things.

This story caught my eye because I have been following the gender pay gap in professional sports recently, and the U.S women's soccer team recently implemented an equal pay for their players, unfortunately women's sports are still years away from getting equal pay. I am glad to see this bar is representing women because the sports industry is very partial to men. I think this bar is a necessary breakthrough for women, as we still face existing gender discrimination. One goal that Jenny wants to accomplish is” to start a movement to build a culture around women's sports spectatorship” and really wants people to understand that it is the small changes that have an impact even if just switching a couple of letters in a name. I think the biggest challenge they will experience is the lack of experience to run their own bar and knowledge of what to do if a challenge does sprout because she is a new business owner.

If I were the brand or product manager, I would just try to implement more advertising to this bar because it is still so new and not many people know about it. If it were my business, I would want to have themed days of the week to make it more fun since it is already such a unique environment. One of my ideas is if you wear a female athlete's jersey, you receive a small prize, or a discount. As a new business, every dollar does matter, however I think something like that would be good publicity, by using word of mouth. After all, people do love a good discount. Jenny wants it to feel like a normal bar which does make sense because if it works it works but I foresee anything bad happening besides maybe money going out the door which is normal with starting a brand-new business.
